Northern Italy’s Off-The-Beaten Path Romantic Escapes for Honeymooners and Not Only
Northern Italy has some beautiful and not well-known destinations that could be ideal for honeymooners. Some off-the-beaten path areas in Piedmont and other more common places in Lombardia are a great romantic escape for any couple, even during the month of August. The Barolo region and the Lake Como and Lake Garda offer great options for travelers that are looking for something unique.
How to get there
Fly to Milan Malpensa Airport, Lake of Como is North-East and and Lake Garda is South-East (Map). I would suggest getting to Piedmont first (West), then to Lake Garda and finally to Lake Como to be closer to the airport on the way back.
Piedmont
Monforte d’Alba is certainly a hidden secret of Piedmont: a small medieval village in the Barolo region (Barolo is also one of the best Italian wines; the most expensive together with Brunello di Montalcino from Tuscany), not to miss for its wines, food and quiet life. This area is also very well-known for its truffles. Be aware that Italians spend August away from home in resort towns and these places tend to be empty.
The place to stay in Monforte d’Alba is Villa Beccaris. This hotel is a small intimate place with a nice coartyard and a nice swimming pool where you could cool off if too hot. The villa was the house of general Cesare Beccaris in the eighteen century. I just checked the web site and they have a great deal through August 31: 650 Euros per 2 people per 7 days.

The village of Monforte d’Alba has great restaurants that you should not miss: Felicin, Trattoria de la Posta (both 2 Michelin stars) and La Collina. Try all of them!!! You will not regret it!
Lombardia
East of Piedmont is Lombardia, the region comprises the famous Lake Garda and Lake Como, settings of numerous movies (Star Wars and Casino Royale to name a few). You might want to drive towards Lake Garda first and stay around Sirmione. From there, you will go through the Franciacorta area (another popular wine producer area) North to Lake of Como.

The place to stay for an unforgettable honeymoon is Villa d’Este in Cernobbio. It is one of the best hotels in the world and belongs to the Leading Hotels of the World. The other hotels mentioned above are very nice and intimate, but this one is something very special.
